Guitar shops worth the trip in Seattle

Pioneer Square, at 83 S Washington — a number of listings put this on Capitol Hill and they are simply wrong. Family-owned since 1996, it is the anchor of the Seattle vintage scene, with appraisal and consignment running alongside the floor stock. If a trip through the city allows exactly one shop, this is the one to spend it on.

South of the city in Renton, and an ESP dealer. Its own account of what it trades in runs “from hard to find used and vintage instruments and amps to the modern, modified and rare” — the sorting principle is not the era. Much of the trade is online, and the shop advertises appointments, so confirm what is actually there before driving out.

Worth stating plainly: this is a two-city operation with a second location in Portland, which puts it closer to a small boutique chain than to a one-off independent. The vintage and used electric stock is deep regardless, and amps, pedals and repair are all covered under the same roof in West Seattle. Judge it on the inventory rather than the founding story.

Vintage guitars and amps, consignment, and a repair bench, all in downtown Tacoma — but call first. The shop’s domain now redirects to a GoDaddy for-sale page, even though Instagram was active through July 2026 and Yelp does not list it as closed. Tacoma is a separate leg from the Seattle loop, and it is not a drive to make on faith.

Fremont, not Ballard, whatever the directories say — the misfiling is common enough to send people to the wrong neighborhood entirely. Curated vintage guitars share the room with analog synths, electric pianos and combo organs, and restoration is handled in house. The mix makes it the most interesting hour in the neighborhood for anyone whose interest runs past six strings.

The only Plek facility in the Pacific Northwest sits in this shop, which is reason enough to bring an instrument that needs proper fretwork. Founded in 1976, the bench has built and repaired for Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Foo Fighters and Heart — grunge-era Seattle guitar history runs straight through here. Budget the bridge crossing; this one is in Bellevue, not the city.

Founded in 1973 by two musicians who left the Los Angeles scene for a small Seattle neighbourhood. A shop that has lasted that long usually means the bench has seen whatever is wrong with your instrument before. Closed Sunday and Monday.

No showroom and no drop-in trade — appointments only, Monday through Thursday. What the bench does is fretwork, tube amp servicing and hand-wound Puget Sounds pickups, and it does nothing else. Book ahead or leave it off the itinerary; there is nothing here to walk into.

Harps and hammered dulcimers of their own manufacture have been the house product since 1979, which is not what most guitar trips are hunting for. The used and vintage guitar wall is legitimate anyway, and the acoustic room is among the better ones in the city. Fremont puts it a few blocks from Mike & Mike’s, so the two pair without adding a stop to the day.

Named for the Seattle neighbourhood it left — the shop now trades in Burien, well south of the city, which is why it sat on the excluded list until this metro grew far enough to reach it. A neighbourhood store rather than a specialist, selling new and used under its own banner of “vintage finds and real world prices”. Worth folding into a run south rather than driving to on its own. The site is mid-rebuild and thin on detail, so call ahead. Closed Sunday and Monday.
