Guitar shops worth the trip in Nashville

Opened in 2021 as Gibson’s first owned-and-operated flagship, with about 300 guitars on the floor and a Custom Shop presence. It sits downtown rather than on Guitar Row, and the crowd reflects that — this is the most tourist-facing stop in the city. The counterweight is access to current production and custom work in one room, which no vintage dealer can offer.

Walter Carter spent years as Gibson’s historian before opening this in 2012, and the scholarship shows in how the roughly 1,600 instruments on hand are described. The 2022 merger with The North American Guitar widened the acoustic and boutique side considerably. Note the address: the shop moved up the block from 625 to 606 8th Ave S, second floor.

George Gruhn wrote the identification guide the rest of the trade authenticates by, and the shop has run on that authority since 1970. Clapton, Emmylou Harris, Vince Gill and Keith Urban have all come through. It is scholarly rather than showy — expect to be told exactly what an instrument is, including the parts of the answer you did not want.

Bursts, custom-color Strats, and custom-color Marshalls are the house specialties, which narrows the inventory to a particular and expensive corner of the market. The business started in Ithaca, New York in 1993 and consolidated everything into Nashville. Directions get this one wrong constantly — it is on 8th Avenue South, not 21st.

Woman-owned since 2009 and named for the band Fanny, this East Nashville shop became a nationally cited model for what inclusive music retail actually looks like in practice. The stock runs to vintage and consignment with a repair bench attached. One caution: the founders announced their retirement in 2024 and listed the building, and the sale status is unconfirmed — call before you plan a trip around it.

Owner Gabriel Hernandez came to this from an executive job at Gibson and opened the doors in 2016. American Songwriter has since named it one of the three vintage destinations in Nashville worth the trip, and appraisal work sits alongside the sales floor. Weekends are by appointment only, so book ahead rather than turning up on a Saturday.

Family-owned since 1976 and an exclusive Five Star Gibson Acoustic Dealer, with a repair tech who has been at it for 35 years. The catalog is broad and full-service rather than vintage-focused, so treat it as a working musician’s store first. Important: the longtime 12th Ave S location closed permanently in April 2026 — Dickerson Pike is the current address.

Pedals are the draw here — boutique builders alongside the authorized-dealer lines — with guitars, basses, amps, and synths filling out the rest. It is the closest thing East Nashville has to a dedicated effects counter. Their website currently reads “under construction” and references a new location, so confirm the address and hours by phone before going.

Beau Hudson opened this in 2023 after two decades working for established vintage dealers, and authentication and appraisal are a real part of the business rather than a sideline. Being new, the inventory is curated rather than deep — it will not out-stock the 8th Avenue shops. Worth the short detour into Berry Hill if you have something that needs a second opinion.

Owner and head luthier Patrick Boyle came out of the Galloup School of Lutherie and has logged more than a thousand repairs since 2011, which is the real reason to make the drive out to Madison. Stock leans player-grade vintage and boutique rather than collector pieces, priced to be used. A repair-first shop that happens to sell guitars, not the other way around.
